By Nick TrewsleyThe fashion industry has a lot to do with how we dress.
For example, the way that we think about what constitutes a “good” fashion outfit can be shaped by our personal preferences.
But how do we find the best clothes for our needs and tastes?
A new BBC documentary, The Fashion Revolution, takes a look at the evolution of fashion and offers advice on how to get the best look for yourself.
The film’s director, Mark Evans, says he wanted to understand the history of fashion, how it came to be and why women have been buying it for so long.
“If you want to know why a particular garment is popular, it’s a very good question, and I wanted to look at why it’s so popular,” he says.
“We have all the answers.
It’s a history of the fashion industry.”‘
Aesthetic choices’We look at some of the top names in the industry – Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Louis Giuffre – but we also have a wealth of people who don’t look like those names and the fashion experts we spoke to said that they were inspired by the clothes of the past.
And what does this mean?
Fashion has changed a lot in the past two centuries.
“It’s not just about being fashionable, it has also changed our world and our lives,” says Professor Peter Krawczyk, an anthropologist at University College London who has studied fashion for more than 40 years.
“You can wear a suit in a world where clothes were made in the 18th century, in which you have to live with your clothes, and you can wear your suit in the world of the 20th century where clothes are made in China.”
What’s more, fashion is changing as women go to work, the length of their workday and the quality of their careers.
In addition to this, the fashion landscape has changed dramatically.
“The history of dress is not a history in terms of the times, but rather in terms the kinds of people that were buying it,” says Mr Evans.
“People who were buying this stuff and dressing it in the fashion of the day were very different to those who were wearing the stuff as a fashion statement.”
They were not the people who were going to wear it to work or to go to the cinema or to party or to have their friends over for dinner.
“So, what does all this mean for us?”
When we are walking down the street and looking at these different brands and the kinds that are coming out, it feels very different,” he said.”
I don’t think we’re really looking at the same thing anymore.
“And so there’s really a new generation of people and it’s quite fascinating.”
Mr Evans says that, at a time when people are looking for a more diverse range of clothing and accessories, the world needs to make the right choice.
“Look, there’s a lot of things that we can do to make sure that we have the best available range of clothes and we’re also looking for ways to do that without changing our own values,” he told ABC News Breakfast.
“What we’re trying to do is to understand what the clothes were used for, the origins of the clothing, what the history is of the people buying these things and what they were wearing.”
