As the saying goes, power in style is power in life. At least, that seems to be the case during my shoot with multi-talented personality, Keegan Basil. Dressed in Topman, Keegan showed ease as we hiked, crawled and stumbled between locations – returning to nature in a bid to mimic its fluidity; searching for the perfect backdrop to showcase strength and vulnerability in an age where style is loaded with its own emotive diction. In collaboration with internationally renowned men’s retailer, Topman, we bring to you a lookbook that exudes a man of confidence, self-awareness, and the kind of cool to match the icy nights in the Saharan desert climate. … A MENSWEAR GUIDE TO LUXURY STYLE
As with any trend, there carries with it an immediate response by fashion’s elite who all but prescribe their matter-of-fact guides to appropriating the latest craze in to our wardrobes. And, despite minimalism’s call for less, there appears to be a similar fate that awaits – evident in designers reinventing basics at alarming speeds to cater to the growing number of minimalists and their (stigmatic) neutral wardrobes and palettes. Redirecting back to the core interpretation of minimalism, it seems apt to say that, rather than buying in to every trend and release, minimalist’s typically opt for less things in favor of investing in one or two items that can outlive seasonal wear. … A BONA FIDE STYLE GUIDE FOR MINIMALIST’S
When the opportunity presents itself, trust yours truly to grab it without hesitation. As the family headed out on errands, I grabbed my things and headed off on a solo brunch expedition, camera in tow, forcing a magazine into my already stuffed tote. Having had one of those “what to wear” mornings, I grabbed a ruffled-sleeve jumper off my feature rail and paired it with some well-loved trousers and chunky ankle boots. Not sure where I’d land up, I let the smell of coffee and eggs guide me to my destination. … SOLO BRUNCHING, GLOSSY COVERS AND ROMANTIC SLEEVES
Hello from a rather optimistic me, despite being in pajamas and still wearing yesterday’s mascara – in my defense I did hit a 40 odd minute run at the gym yesterday, which was absolutely life-changing, but draining all the same. Nevertheless, as April makes its much appreciated exit, I figured I’d give this sort of blogpost another go as we usher in the month of May, and with it, new opportunities and renewed spirits (like I said, feeling rather optimistic)
I have quite a bit lined up for this month, including new approaches to work and staying motivated, and finally taking the plunge to start my youtube channel (I reached for the backspace button just there but it’s finally time as I no longer have the “I’m waiting until my braces are removed” excuse..) … 5 THINGS: LIFE UPDATE
As the days turned in to weeks, I began wondering when that magic light bulb moment would hit me, it seemed begotten the days when inspiration so readily availed itself and stood out in every moment. The silence was more than deafening, it was scary. Over the past several weeks, I became so engulfed in my inability to create; questioning my journey, reflecting and assessing with an urgency that bordered on the realm of desperate. You see, … FINDING ONESELF AMIDST CONJECTURE; AN ODE TO SIMPLICITY
In attempts to redirect my post-fashion-week excitement, uttering words like visionary and innovative, while relevant to the narrative, seem inadequate as I string together my thoughts on some of the collections previewed at the Mercedes Benz Cape Town Fashion week last night. … RE-IMAGINING AFRICA THROUGH CAPE TOWN FASHION WEEK
As quickly as trends make their way on to our style radar, so do they disappear; some gradually fading out, while others end abruptly; leaving us questioning whether a trend may have existed at all. Whilst we’ve all – yes, even us so-called “minimalists ” – bought in to one trend or more with each season, the habit of reverting to our favorite classic uniforms of infinite cool and effortless chic seems to be the safety net that is both unavoidable and irresistible in all its manifestations. Take the Parisienne classic striped shirt and red-lipstick twosome, a classic by anyone’s standards, but with the ability to both transcend it’s locality in favor of shared and unique preferences across the globe. … CLASSICALLY FRENCH IN PARISIENNE STRIPES AND ROUGE À LÈVRES
SPOTLIGHT: NATIVE ESPRESSO BAR
V&A WATERFRONT, CAPE TOWN
The Native Espresso Bar, both indulgent yet unassuming, has reaffirmed Cape Town’s appreciation for the coffee culture expanding in every food district across the Western Cape. With a select menu of finely crafted coffees and deli-style bites, it’s at-ease nature easily accommodates the city-explorer seeking refuge from the city bustle, while simultaneously offering the opportunity for basking in some of the locale’s culture and scenery. If inspiration is what you seek, perhaps a quiet corner can help unlock the inner wordsmith – plug ports at various points all but welcome the freelance writer to lock-down for an hour or two. … READY, SET, ESPRESSO
In an attempt to reintroduce myself after nearly a year and half of wearing (and loathing) braces, I decided to delve head first in to a shade of lipstick as dark as night with a deep red wine stain to contrast nearly every feature on my face. Instantly transformed in to someone new, I still felt like me, only more present; halted in a moment where commanding the room – the attention of everyone present – was secondary to the bold confidence I was now beginning to embrace. You see, for yours truly, the thought of a bold lipstick frightened me for some time. However, unlike my unwavering preference for black sugarless caffeine, I was now almost certain that a bold lip held reverence over the rest of my minimal makeup collection, it’s power to transform with minimal effort scoring it off the charts. … STRIKING GOLD WITH A BOLD LIP
In an industry so often misconstrued by harsh criticism for its lack of inclusiveness, I was recently inspired by the sui generis and hardworking (Los Angeles based) Amy of Vagabond Youth notoriety, who partnered with Tresemme to attend NYFW.
Like Amy, I too shared a dream of one day attending fashion week and doing so because the work and content I was creating was of value to someone. Having grown up confused about where and how I could fit in, worrying that I didn’t have the right look … NAVIGATING CAPE TOWN FASHION WEEK 2017
The lovely team behind locally produced craft art, LAZY DAISY, sent over a few of their selected items imploring me to style my space and outfit around each piece. What’s more, with each piece attentively hand crafted, no two artworks are alike. Simply put these pieces are much like the inimitable objet d’art we so often seek out on field trips to museums showcasing rare art from lifetimes before. … THE MINIMALIST’S PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCE
Intriguing as it may be, the bustling-city functions at a fast pace; existing in a world of its own; synonymous with people besieged in languor and anxiety. Escaping the city, though just for a short while, has become the accepted cosmopolitan’s approach to dealing with the often tiresome effects of city-living. Booking a staycation at a luxe hotel, or road-tripping to a guesthouse in the winelands, it’s this short time away where one can truly unwind and before returning to the city.
